James Dean signed agreement with Warner Brothers, agreeing to repay an advance on his salary for ''East of Eden''. Dated 7 April 1954, Dean boldly signs the second page in black fountain pen, ''James Dean''. Agreement lays out a series of repayments, reading in part, ''You are hereby authorized to deduct said sums from my weekly compensation...In the event that I am not allowed to continue to render my services in the role of 'Cal' in the motion picture tentatively entitled 'EAST OF EDEN'...'' Two page agreement on two sheets measures 8.5'' x 11'', stapled at top left. Minor creasing, wear and light discoloration on verso of second page. Overall in very good condition.
Accompanied by several ancillary documents, including seven unsigned promissory notes matching the repayment schedule. Each note measures 8'' x 6'', paper-clipped at top left. Also includes a Warner Brothers expense receipt dated 4 September 1954, and several notes from Jane Deacy's office regarding advances made in 1954 on Dean's account for his expenses, from loans given to him to telephone charges to hospital bills; notes run five pages of various sizes, in very good condition.
