June 2025 Sally Ride Auction Ends Thursday, June 26th, 5pm Pacific
Sally Ride's personally owned news feed announcing her selection in NASA Astronaut Group 8, the first NASA selection since 1967. Dated 16 January 1978, news feed reads in part, ''The space agency today announced the selection of 35 new astronauts, including the first six women and the first three blacks, in America's spwce [sic] corps...The new list breaks sex and race barriers that have existed since the National Aeronautics and Space Administration selected its first Mercury astronauts in 1959...'' Ride's name is listed along with her 34 fellow astronauts. The news feed goes on to discuss NASA's plans for the space shuttle program, which is ''expected to go to work carrying satellites, laboratories and scientists into orbit on a schedule ranging from a flight a month to perhaps a flight a week.'' Three sheets are stapled at top left, ranging in size from 8.5'' x 5.75'' to 8.5'' x 9.75''. Very good condition. With an LOA from CMG Worldwide who represents the Sally Ride estate.
