Scarce signed photograph of Mao Zedong as Chairman of the People's Republic of China, with his bold handwriting in Chinese characters. Mao Zedong is one of the scarcest signatures, with this example not only signed as Chairman of the PRC, but also a fine, highly detailed autograph, signed in fountain pen on the border of a red damask silk covered board that holds the photo.

Two silk-covered panels are attached to the photo display, which fold to enclose the signed photo, with a label of the official Chinese state seal on the reverse. One of the silk panels features a gilt illustration of the Great Wall of China, and the other a gilt embossed message in Bulgarian, translating, "To the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers Rayko Damyanov in honour of the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the P.R.C. / October 1954 / Chairman of P.R.C. / Mao Zedong".

The photograph shows Chairman Mao in 1954 during festivities for the five-year anniversary of the PRC, accompanied by Rayko Damyanov of the Bulgarian Communist Party, who visited China for the occasion. This diplomatic gift was given to Damyanov, who was Deputy Chairman of the Bulgarian Council of Ministers, and is also accompanied by six photos during his visit. Lot also includes a 2014 bilingual book in Chinese/Bulgarian printed for the 65th anniversary of the PRC, presented by the Chinese Embassy to the son of the late Damyanov, also containing additional photos from the 1954 visit.

Photograph and signed board measure 11.75'' x 7.25'', unfolding a size of 11.75'' x 16.5''. Separation starting at hinges of panels, and light soiling to silk. Overall in very good condition. A scarce diplomatic gift beautifully signed by Chairman Mao at the very beginning of the PRC.
