Scarce signed portrait photograph of Mao Tse-Tung, identified by a caption on the verso as Chairman of the People's Republic of China, with his bold handwriting in Chinese characters. Mao Tse-Tung is one of the scarcest signatures, with this example not only signed as Chairman of the PRC, but also a fine, highly detailed autograph, signed on the top right border of a damask silk covered board, measuring 7.25'' x 9.375'', to which is affixed the portrait photograph of Mao, measuring 4.625'' x 6.25''.

The photograph, along with 21 others, were presented by Mao to Soviet military and agriculture leader Marshal Semyon Budyonny, part of Stalin's inner circle and a well-known cavalry officer and horse breeder. A type of horse is even named after him, bred by Budyonny for use in cavalry regiments. These 21 other photographs, all mounted to silk boards, show various scenes related to equestrian sports and horse breeding in China, with many deferential to their ally, referencing knowledge and techniques shared by the Soviet Union. A few photos cite events in 1952, suggesting that the collection was given to Budyonny shortly after Mao assumed the Chairmanship in 1954, perhaps as a diplomatic gift of introduction. On the verso of each are captions in both Mandarin and Russian, with full translations included here.

Photographs are presented in a beautiful silk covered embroidered box, with a metallic plate to front depicting a Chinese vista. Interior is lined in blue silk, with a fabric portrait of Mao in the back, and a painted dedication in Cyrillic on the front. Box measures 8.25'' x 10''. Photos and box are beautifully preserved, with only a small amount of rubbing to corners of box. Photos are very good to near fine. Chairman Mao's semi-matte photo has a small bend to lower left corner; damask silk board and overall presentation is near fine with an exceptionally bold, detailed signature.
