Lot #1: Dindga McCannon Large 75'' x 50'' Oil on Canvas of ''Harriet Tubman - Warrior''

Powerful and richly colored oil on canvas painting by Dindga McCannon, founding member of Where We At Black Women Artists in 1971, and also the Weusi Artist Collective in 1965. In this large 75'' x 50'' painting, McCannon pays homage to an American icon, titled ''Harriet Tubman - Warrior'', symbolic of McCannon's decades long work to center the stories of African American women. Signed and dated by McCannon, ''dindga 2020'' at lower right. Fine condition.

Painting is accompanied by McCannon's personal essay regarding the painting, reading in part, ''One of the ongoing themes in my work since 1971 has been the celebration of African American women...I felt it was my calling to tell our stories...Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross, freed approx. 50 people out of the jaws of slavery...she is one of my sheroes. In this work I did not aim for a portrait of Ms Tubman - I wanted to do an expression of her personality; her eyes are large and glaring into the night as she & that lantern are beacons of light...''
