We at Nate D. Sander’s Auctions recently sold an Andy Warhol autographed Campbell’s soup can, the subject of his iconic pop art piece, for $3,750. Item details are below:
Andy Warhol Twice-Signed Iconic Campbell’s Soup Can
Andy Warhol signed Campbell’s soup can, made famous by Warhol with his 1962 artwork ”Campbell’s Soup Cans”. The pop artist signs ”Andy Warhol” in black felt tip on the tomato soup label, as well as ”Andy” on the metal top of the can. Accompanied by an LOA from Daniel J. Elmergreen, caretaker in the 1980s for art patron Frank Weinstein’s home, where this can originates. In the LOA, Elmergreen writes that Warhol would often go into the cupboards of his friends’ homes to sign ”iconic brands”. Can measures 4” tall and 2.625” in diameter. Bottom lid has hole punctured, so can is empty. Rusting to metal and some discoloration to label, which is still firmly attached to the can. Overall in very good condition, rare as twice-signed and with provenance attesting to the personal nature of signatures. Sold for $3,750.

Andy Warhol signed Campbell’s soup label. He signs ”Andy Warhol” in black felt tip between ”Tomato” and ”SOUP” on the label peeled from a can of the product Warhol turned into an icon. Autographed cans of the mass-produced soup were sold at the famous ”American Supermarket” exhibit at Paul Bianchini’s Upper East Side gallery in 1964. Label measures approximately 9.5” x 5”. Near fine. With PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $2,500.

Andy Warhol signed Campbell’s soup label. The pop artist signs “Andy Warhol” in black felt tip on the label, still affixed to the Campbell’s soup can, made uber-famous after Warhol’s 1962 “Campbell’s Soup Cans”, a series of 32 paintings representing each soup flavor. Autographed cans of Campbell’s soup were sold at the famous “American Supermarket” exhibit at Paul Bianchini’s Upper East Side gallery in 1964, likely where this was obtained. Can measures 4″ tall and 2.625″ in diameter. Bottom lid has been removed, so can is empty. Rusting to metal, overall in very good condition. Sold for $2,700.

Warhol signs ”To Joan / With Love / Andy Warhol” on the half-title page, where the Campbell’s sketch also appears. Published by Harcourt Brace: New York: 1975, first edition is housed in its original dustjacket. Runs 241pp., measuring 5.75” x 8.5”. Very light wear to dustjacket. Book is near fine. Fly-leaf features a giant sketch by Warhol of the Campbell’s Tomato Soup can he popularized in 1964 with his definitive exhibit, ”The American Supermarket”. Sketch, rendered in black felt tip is dedicated in Warhol’s hand, ”To Darren”, labeled ”Campbell’s / Tomato / Soup” and signed, ”Andy Warhol”. Book is a compilation of Warhol’s opinions and reflections on fame, art and popular culture. Bound in yellow paper boards with orange cloth spine and black print lettering. Runs 240pp. Measures 5.75” x 8.75”. Very slight cocking to spine. Staining to bottom edge of boards and to the bottom edge of the rear free endpaper, else near fine. With unclipped dustjacket showing minor edge wear and small stain to verso, else near fine. Sold for $1,875.
