Lot #73: Paul Tibbets Signed Statement Regarding Dropping the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima During World War II -- ''…I was shot in the ass with confidence…''

Description

Intriguing signed statement by Paul Tibbets, pilot of the Enola Gay, after they dropped the bomb on Hiroshima during World War II. Statement is an excerpt from a ''USA Today'' interview, in which Tibbets talks about the lead up to the bombing. When asked how he got involved in the mission, Tibbets responds, ''I was called into the office of the commanding general of the 2nd Air Force. He said, 'This is your assignment,' and I saluted him and said, 'Yes sir'.'' When asked if he was nervous, Tibbets responds, ''Not the least…I was shot in the ass with confidence. There wasn't anything I couldn't do.'' With much more interesting content regarding how Tibbets believes that the bomb ultimately saved American and Japanese lives, as it precluded an invasion of Japan. Signed ''Paul Tibbets'' at the conclusion. Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. Near fine condition.
