Lot #60: George Washington Signed Three-Language Ship's Papers -- Signed as President in 1796

Description

George Washington three-language ship's papers signed as President, granting safe passage to Fair Lady, a schooner traveling between Massachusetts and St. Croix carrying hoops, corn, shingles, scantling and staves (though possibly slaves). Dated 17 December 1796 when the document was presented by the ship's Captain to the customs office, and after Washington signed the papers in advance of the voyage. With a prominent signature by Washington in center of document, next to the fully intact wax-based paper seal. Countersigned by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering. Measures 13'' x 16''. A few small holes and light wear consistent with age, overall in very good plus condition. Ship's papers are desirable manuscripts in a presidential collection, with ones signed by Washington in condition such as this especially so.
