Jimmy Carter hand-annotated speech from his 1976 Presidential campaign, in high praise of the history of the Democratic party. Heavily hand-edited by Carter in blue ballpoint, speech was delivered to the AFL-CIO convention on 15 September 1976, the same day that Gerald Ford kicked off his campaign for President. In the speech, Carter calls back to the Presidencies of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, and praises initiatives such as Social Security, the minimum wage, voting rights and Medicare, mentioning that ''our opponent's party fought against that progress.'' Some of the handwritten edits include Carter writing that Democrats ''cared for people and were not controlled by special interests...we are being ruled by special interests, and by politicians who have lost touch with us...'' Speech runs three pages on three separate sheets measuring 8.5'' x 11''. Near fine condition.
