James Buchanan warrant signed as President, dated 14 June 1858 authorizing the Secretary of State to affix the Great Seal to ''…my Proclamation convening the Senate of the United States on the 15th instant…'' On the same day as this document - 14 June 1858, Congress adjourned without establishing a reconvene date. However, the nation was in crisis: whether ''Bleeding Kansas'' should become a slave or free state, an important treaty with the Sioux Nation, and the effects of the Panic of 1857 all needed to be addressed, therefore President Buchanan called the Senate back to a special session. Single page on bifolium measures 8'' x 10'', boldly signed by Buchanan. Block of toning, mounting tape hinged to tape on verso and shallow folds, overall very good.
