Lot #28: George Washington Encapsulated Signature, Matted with ''Washington Crossing the Delaware'' to Create a Powerful Visual Display Measuring 26'' x 24.5''

Description

A stirring patriotic display, featuring a photo of Emanuel Leutze's painting, ''Washington Crossing the Delaware'', matted with the CAG encapsulated signature of George Washington. Signature measures approximately 4'' x 2'', appearing underneath the photo of Washington standing stalwart on the bow of his boat, leading troops across the Delaware River in the middle of the night on Christmas 1776 to launch a surprise attack against British forces. The winter of 1776 had not been kind to the Patriots, having been driven out of New York into Pennsylvania. Desertions were high and morale was low. Then, on 19 December, Thomas Paine published ''The Crisis'' (''These are the times that try men's souls''), berating the ''summer soldiers'' who deserted and urging those remaining to push on through adversity. Washington had the address read aloud to his troops two days before they crossed the Delaware, a highly dangerous and precarious mission. The result was the pivotal victory in the Battle of Trenton on 26 December that greatly lifted the morale of the troops at a critical point in the War. Entire display measures 26'' x 24.5''. Toning and repaired tear through signature, overall in very good condition with bold handwriting.
