Civil War magic lantern slide, showing the Marshall House in Alexandria, Virginia, the site where Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth was killed, the first officer killed in the War. After the Union army occupied Alexandria, Colonel Ellsworth, a close friend of President Lincoln's, attempted to remove the Confederate flag atop the Marshall House when he was shot by rebel sympathizer James W. Jackson, the inn's owner. Both Jackson and Ellsworth would become martyrs for their respective sides. Glass slide shows the ''Marshall House'' sign above the door to the inn. Measures 4'' x 3.25'', cased in wood measuring 7'' x 4''. Near fine condition.
