Lot #16: Napoleon Bonaparte Letter Signed -- 1813 Letter to His Step-Son with Excellent Military Content: ''...it's not yet decided whether Prussia will join the campaign against us...''

Description

Superb letter signed by Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor of France, written to his stepson, Prince Eugene de Beauharnais. Datelined 14 March 1813 in the morning from Trianon, Napoleon writes of military alliances and strategy, as the Sixth Coalition was closing in on him. Letter in French translates in part,

''My son, I've received the letter you sent from Leipzig on the evening of 9 March. You don't say whether General Lauriston told you the direction that I was indicating...General Flahaut will reach you, I think, tomorrow. As soon as you have news from General Morand in Pomerania you must let me have it; even mere rumors that might reach you about it. Our most recent news suggests that it's not yet decided whether Prussia will join the campaign against us. However, since General York's treachery and the shape that things have taken since then, the cabinet in Berlin doesn't seem as if it will remain our ally for long; but I do not think that they have as many troops as General Regnier believes. There are many sick men in General York's corps. All the Russians who arrive from the Russian army tell us that there are many sick men. Whatever one says, a large body of the army is outside Danzig. It's true that they have not yet entered Warsaw, that they are going to call up the national guard and that they have not allowed any communication between the town and their army, in order to conceal their situation and to prevent many men from getting into the town to take refuge from the cold. Your affectionate father / Napoleon''.

Bifolium letter on four pages measures 7.375'' x 9.125'' as folded. Single horizontal fold and light wear, overall near fine condition.
