Lot #9: Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed as President, Authorizing a Military Reservation at Fort Shaw, Montana Territory -- Countersigned by General William T. Sherman & Secretary of War William Belknap

Description

Ulysses S. Grant document signed as President, countersigned by Commanding General William Tecumseh Sherman and Secretary of War William W. Belknap. In this document, dated 6 January 1870, Grant authorizes a military reservation at Fort Shaw, Montana Territory, signing ''U.S. Grant'' in fountain pen.

In 1870, Fort Shaw served as the headquarters for both the 13th and 7th Infantry Regiments, with frequent confrontations between Native Americans and white settlers, especially after gold was found near the Fort in 1874. It was named for Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, commander of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the second African-American regiment formed during the Civil War. A strong abolitionist, Shaw encouraged his men to refuse their pay during the war until it was equal to the pay received by white soldiers. In 1876, soldiers from Fort Shaw marched to the Little Bighorn battlefield and buried the soldiers of the 7th Cavalry found there, including General George Armstrong Custer.

Document measures 10'' x 8'' unfolded, on blue lined paper originally folded into three panels. Light wear, and small separation starting at folds, overall in very good condition, with strong signatures. With two vintage stamps.
