Thomas Jefferson autograph letter signed as President, datelined Washington, 9 February 1803. In this requisition to his financial advisor John Barnes, Jefferson instructs payment of $247.66 be made to Étienne Lemaire, the steward of the Executive Mansion, who was responsible for management of the household staff and for meals served. Letter reads in full, ''Mr. Barnes / Pay to Mr. Lemaire on order two hundred & forty seven dollars sixty six cents for value received on account of / Your humble sevt / Th: Jeferson'', with Jefferson also writing John Barnes' name again at bottom. With docketing on front of letter by Joseph Dougherty, also employed at the Executive Mansion. Document measures 6.875'' x 4.875'', hinged at top to slightly larger card. Trimmed on left side, some toning and fading. Overall in very good condition. A rare handwritten letter related to management of the Executive Mansion, signed by Jefferson as President.
