As a proponent of countless social causes and philanthropies, Ashe was ceaseless in his efforts to help others throughout his life. Ashe received honorary degrees from Bryan College, Dartmouth College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Long Island University, Princeton University , Saint John's University, Trinity University, Hartford College, Virginia Union University, University of South Carolina, New York University and more. Ashe received many of the degrees before his passing in 1993, with a portion of the degrees awarded posthumously. Colorful robes in various school colors. With ''Ashe'' handwritten on the tag of an olive green and brown robe, ''Univ. of So. Carolina'' on the tag of another one, and ''Queens College Charlotte N.C. / 5/4/02'' on a third hood.
