Plate is a copy of the citation and reads in part, ''...Arthur Ashe, Jr. / World-Class Athlete, Successful Writer, Advocate For Youth / You started winning at a young age and have not stopped yet...With your study of the African American athlete you demonstrated strength as a researcher and talent as a writer...Your work with inner-city youths has given us an example of the positive role sports can play in society...''
