Lot #174: Arthur Ashe's Cap, Gown & Diploma From the Honorary Doctorate He Was Given by Northeastern University

Arthur Ashe honorary degree archive from Northeastern University, which conferred upon him an honorary doctorate degree on 13 September of 1990. Lot includes: (1) Cap and gown he wore at the ceremony. Black velour cap by features a golden tassel and E.R. Moore brand label sewn inside with size indicated as 7 1/2. Hatband has folds, else near fine. Deep red and black velour gown also by E.R. Moore is a size A58. Near fine. (2) Diploma issued to Ashe makes him Doctor of Public Service, and a citation on a separate sheet reads in part: ''...You are, quite simply, a motivator and inspirational leader...'' Diploma and citation each measure 10'' x 8'' and are in fine condition. They are housed in a fine red cloth case bearing the name of the University in gilt, with a matching lidded slipcase in fine condition, measuring 11.5'' x 9.25''. (3) Seven semi-matte 10'' x 8'' near fine color photographs taken during the ceremony showing Ashe smiling warmly as he receives the honor and poses with Northeastern officials and graduates. Sadly, just three years later, Ashe would pass away from AIDS he'd acquired in a blood transfusion. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
