Tennis legend Ashe was winner of the Doubles competition at the Puerto Rican event in the final year before his retirement from the sport. His achievements were unprecedented as an athlete of color, as the first black winner of the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, the Australian Open and first black member of the U.S. Davis Cup Team.
