Lot #83: Tennis Legend Arthur Ashe's 1977 Day Planner -- He Starts the Year Off With "Beat McNamara"

Description

Arthur Ashe's 1977 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life, particularly as he had won Wimbledon two years prior, as the first African American in history. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on most every page of the spiral-bound "Eaton's" Day-At-A-Glance book, save for some spotty weeks where he was on a rest. He notes various tennis matches throughout the year, including the "Tournament of Champions" and "Wimbledon". He frequently writes players against whom he competed: he starts off the year with "beat McNamara…beat Bornstedt…beat Pfister…lost to Alexander". He also attended various tennis and sports-related functions, including the "Davis Cup Dinner" and the "ATP Board Meeting". His year included various trips around the world, including one to "Jo'Burg". Media appearances and contacts include ABC, NY Times, Larry King and many more. He looked forward to watching "Roots," based on the book by his friend Alex Haley and writes it on the nights it aired on TV in late January; he also excitedly writes "Sammy Davis night!!" on 29 August. He writes in large letters "Colored Girls" on 2 September, although it's unclear to what he's referring. With much more personal content, including hundreds of appointments and notes to himself on the last page regarding a seemingly important event, "Dress for Occasion / Action / Variety of Scenes / Keep it Humorous / Tender Moment". Diary features a black faux-leather soft cover that is tearing slightly at binding. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with mild toning throughout. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow. A very personal record of each significant day at the height of Ashe's career.
