Arthur Ashe's World Championship of Tennis Finalist Medal From 1975 -- The Year He Defeated Bjorn Borg & Won the WCT Championship
Description
Arthur Ashe's World Championship of Tennis finalist medal from 1975. Ashe's victory over opposing finalist Bjorn Borg won him the WTC championship that year. Large medal features slightly concave faces with designs in relief. Obverse depicts a shield with the WCT logo: a pair of globes resting atop a tennis racket beneath a string of seven small stars. Shield is flanked by two tennis players extending their hands to shake. Laurel leaves surround the scene in the background and a scroll at bottom center is engraved: ''ARTHUR / ASHE''. Arcing over the top is, ''WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF TENNIS''. The WCT trophy cup is the focal point of the reverse, with ''1975'' and ''FINALIST'' appearing on scrolls to the top and bottom respectively. On each side of the trophy, the participating countries are listed and a line of 16 stars dot the perimeter on the left and right. Solid bronze medal bears a Medallic Art Co. N.Y. stamp to the rim and measures 4'' in diameter. Weighs 6.5 ounces. Housed beautifully in its original red hinged case with cream satin lining, measuring 5.25'' square. Medal is in fine condition, save for just a touch of tarnishing to the rim. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
