Arthur Ashe's Medal From the 1971 World Championship of Tennis Finals
Description
Arthur Ashe's World Championship of Tennis finalist medal from 1971. Large medal features slightly concave faces with designs in relief. Obverse depicts a shield with the WCT logo: a pair of globes resting atop a tennis racket beneath a string of seven small stars. Shield is flanked by two tennis players extending their hands to shake. Laurel leaves surround the scene in the background and a scroll at bottom center is engraved: ''ARTHUR / ASHE''. Arcing over the top is, ''WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF TENNIS''. The WCT trophy cup is the focal point of the reverse, with ''1971'' and ''FINALIST'' appearing on scrolls to the top and bottom respectively. On each side of the trophy, the participating countries are listed and a line of 16 stars dot the perimeter on the left and right. Solid bronze medal bears a Medallic Art Co. N.Y. stamp to the rim and measures 4'' in diameter. Weighs 6.5 ounces. Housed beautifully in its original red hinged case with cream satin lining, measuring 5.25'' square and with his name printed in gilt lettering on the lid. Medal is in near fine condition. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
