It was this year that Ashe made history as the first African American player to win men's singles at the U.S. Open. Double-handled silver trophy is engraved with the name of the tournament and comes mounted to a base with a silver band engraved, ''1968 Champion''. Lid features a floral finial. Maker's mark is obscured by the base but a similar trophy won by Ashe in the same tournament bears Schwarzschild's mark. Measures 6'' in diameter at the mouth and 13.25'' in total height.
