The chart-topping single was responsible for launching the entire ''Thriller'' record on a trajectory toward its ultimate position as the best-selling album of all time. Designed by J. Parks, Jackson wore the ''Beat It'' jacket while performing in 1988. Michael gave this jacket to Epic Records President Ron Alexenburg's son; Alexenburg signed the Jackson 5 to Epic Records, where Michael's career took off.
