Rene Gagnon WWII autograph letter signed as a Private First Class in the U.S. Marine Corps. A hero of the Battle of Iwo Jima, Gagnon was long believed to be one of the six soldiers pictured in ''Raising The Flag on Iwo Jima'', the iconic image of the turning point of the war. From Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California he writes a love letter to his future wife Pauline Harnois. Dated 23 April 1944, letter reads (uncorrected for minor errors) in part, ''...I'm already dreaming of a White Christmas although I know its almost impossible as well be in the South Seas around Christmas of 1944, but I'm hoping that in 1945 well be decorating a tree all of our own...The way their rushing us around here it won't be long before we leave, there issuing us all new field shoes, and camouflage clothes, and combat knives, so our departure isn't far off, darling if I should stop writing suddenly please don't worry, its just because I won't be able to write, but you know I'll send you word as soon as possible...went to camouflage school...hiding like wearing green clothes against green background...they gave us some colored cold cream, and we had to put it on our face to get colored the same as the grass so they couldn't see us when we lay down in the grass...we all looked like Frankenstein's monster...then we started maneuvers through sand and everything, the sand stuck in our faces...and to think women get those mudpacks just for the fun of it...Rene...'' Accompanied by the mailing envelope made out in Gagnon's hand in pencil, including his name and return address. Letter in pencil runs 6pp. on three sheets of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps stationery, measuring 6.25'' x 10.5''. Very good condition.
