William Henry Harrison autograph letter signed, dated 22 January 1821, the time between Harrison's tenures as U.S. Congressman and Senator. Recipient is likely an employee of the U.S. Treasury, as Harrison here requests additional time for his friend and distant relative, William Irwin, to make payment on a surety that Irwin undertook for a man by the name of James Smith. Smith had served as a Paymaster in the War of 1812, which, because of the financial responsibility, required a surety that unfortunately had come due for Irwin. From Columbus, Ohio, Harrison writes in full, ''You forgot to give me an answer to the application I made to you in behalf of Mr. W. Irwine of Cincinnati. The Secy. of the Treasury has referred him to you to fix the time which shall be given him to procure the vouchers necessary to settle the account of Pay Master James Smith whose security he is. Mr. Irwine is a particular friend of mine & a very worthy man. I must beg of you to indulge him with as long time as possible. / Your friend / W.H. Harrison / P.S. Be pleased to drop a line to Mr. Irwine on the subject.'' Single page letter measures 7.75'' x 8.25''. Remnants from mounting along verso of left margin. Some restoration along folds on verso. Very good plus condition.
