Souvenir box made from the USS Constitution, aka ''Old Ironsides'', the hard-fighting frigate commissioned by George Washington in 1794 that, along with five other warships, founded the U.S. Navy. The Constitution distinguished herself in several naval battles during the earliest years of the United States, with her most notable victories highlighted on the bronze medallion atop the box's lid. These are the Battle of Tripoli Harbor in 1804 and three battles with British warships during the War of 1812: the HMS Guerriere, HMS Java and HMS Cyane. Constitution survived all these engagements and remains the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. Souvenir box is made of oak and bronze sourced from the USS Constitution during its restoration in 1927. Measures 7.25'' x 2.5'' x 4'' deep. Chipping to underside of lid at one corner, overall very good to near fine condition.
