Original teletype script for George Lucas' ''Star Wars''. On 17 April 1973, Lucas began writing a 13-page treatment called ''The Star Wars'' and within a year, had expanded the treatment into this rough draft screenplay. Originally titled ''The Star Wars'' Lucas later dropped ''The'' along with a slew of other simplifications, as many considered this original premise too confusing. Every subsequent draft introduced elements that came to define the film, including ''The Force'' being introduced as a supernatural power. Lucas also changed the protagonist of the film's name from ''Luke Starkiller'' to ''Skywalker'' during production. The film was eventually made and released on 25 May 1977 as an immediate worldwide sensation. Beginning of script reads: ''FADE IN: SPACE / A sea of stars is broken by the vast blue surface of the planet, Utapau...Until the recent Great Rebellion, the Jedi Bendu were the most feared warriors in the universe...The leaden sky presses down on a lone figure, Annikin Starkiller, a tall, heavy-set boy of eighteen...'' Script runs 88pp. with 3 holes punched and two brass tacks holding it together. Pages are clean. Near fine.
