Samuel Francis Smith autograph letter signed, datelined Newton Centre on 19 October 1895. Lyricist of patriotic anthem, ''My Country, 'Tis of Thee'', Francis died suddenly on 16 November 1895 while traveling by train to preach in Boston. He writes to an unnamed woman, ''My dear Lady / Yes, Tuesday is the day; and I expect to go to East Bridgewater in the train which leaves Boston at 10:15 a.m. and I suppose reaches you at 11:40 a.m. I anticipate much pleasure in the visit, and I hope it may be one of pleasure and profit to yourselves and the young ladies. / Sincerely yrs. / S. F. Smith''. Single page letter on card-style stationery measures 4.5'' x 7''. A contemporary inscription on the verso reads, ''Dr. S.F. Smith last letter.'' Light creasing and folds, else near fine.
