Richard Nixon autograph letter signed with rare content regarding China, specifically how sanctions would reverse Nixon's work as President in normalizing relations between the two countries. Nixon's famous 1972 visit to China - ''the week that changed the world'' as it was called, is even referenced here. Dated 16 August 1989, Nixon writes to Hugh Scott Jr., former Republican Senate Minority Leader. On his personal embossed stationery penned in blue felt-tip, Nixon writes in full:

''Dear Hugh, / You were most thoughtful to write as you did about my piece in Foreign Affairs. / I am sure you are as concerned as I am about developments in China. I thought you might like to see a column I wrote recently supporting the Administration policy. To adopt sanctions which would force the Chinese leaders to turn back to their posture before 1972 would be a tragedy for the U.S. & for the Chinese people. / With warm regards / Dick''. The article to which Nixon refers, ''Don't Slam the Door on China'', is included, with ''Hugh'' written on the back.

Single page measures 7.25'' x 10.5''. Folds, paperclip impression and minor discoloration to left edge. Very good condition with bold writing by Nixon.
