President John Tyler signed Treaty of Peru, first executed on 17 March 1841 in Lima, Peru, and here signed by Tyler on 12 January 1843 when it was ratified by the President of the United States. Document is countersigned by Secretary of State Daniel Webster, as well as by James Chamberlayne Pickett, the Charge d'Affaires of Peru, who signs the last page on 22 July 1843 when the Treaty was ratified in Lima. Pickett negotiated the Treaty, in which Peru agreed to pay the United States $300,000 to settle all claims of U.S. citizens against Peru, largely related to the destruction of ships and property during Peru's War of Independence from Spain. Eleven page document on six sheets measures 10'' x 14''. With red wax seals next to Pickett's signature upon ratification. Ink smearing to bottom of most pages, and some light soiling throughout. Overall very good condition. An important Presidential signed document in the history of U.S.-Peruvian relations.
