One of the final instances of Herbert Hoover's signature as President. As he prepares to depart from the White House, his disappointment is evident in this letter. He bids a fond farewell to Charles D. Lawrence, New York's Assistant Attorney General, in a typed letter signed ''Herbert Hoover'' on White House stationery. Dated 1 March 1933, three days before FDR took the oath of office, letter reads in part: ''...Before I leave this office I wish to express...I had hoped the opportunity would come to me to propose you for substantial promotion. That, however, was impossible due to the election...Herbert Hoover''. Original envelope is included. 1pp. on card-style stationery measures 7'' x 8.75''. Light toning, else fine.
