Civil War archive featuring Confederate General John B. Floyd's CDV portrait and buttons, with a signed COA for the buttons by a soldier, William R.P. Crocker of the 30th Illinois Infantry, Co. D. General Floyd had been Buchanan's Secretary of War until 1860, when he was indicted on charges of corruption. The case was dismissed, but he defected to the Confederacy where he was disgraced again; he unexpectedly lost the crucial Battle of Fort Donelson to General Grant and Admiral Foote in 1862. CDV portrait of Floyd is by Brady with an E. Anthony backstamp. The trio of buttons are reportedly from Floyd's personal effects; Crocker's COA reads in full: ''Buttons taken from Gen. Floyd's trunk Fort Donelson. This fort was surrendered Feb. 16 1862 to the Federal Army under Gen. U. S. Grant after three days desperate resistance. 15 thousand prisoners including Gen. Buckner were captured and an immense quantity of war material. Generals Floyd and Pillow escaped with a portion of the garrison. Presented by Wm. R. P. Crocker''. CDV measures 2.5'' x 4''. Toning, minor staining and a bit of chipping to the surface at upper left, with notations to verso, else near fine. Light soiling to buttons, else near fine. COA measures 2.75'' x 1''; very good. This unique lot comes housed in an 8.25'' x 12.25'' shadowbox.
