''The Early Poems of John Greenleaf Whittier'' first edition with a frontispiece and biographical introduction of the famous Quaker abolitionist poet. Thomas Y. Crowell: New York: 1893. Poems are organized by themes, including ''Songs of Labor,'' ''Voices of Freedom'' and others. Greenleaf was one of the 19th century ''Fireside Poets'' who, with Longfellow and others, adhered to traditions of form and meter, making them easy to memorize and thus recite around the fire. Padded green leather bound book measures 4.25'' x 6.25'' with ''Whittier'' ornately gold stamped to cover. 335pp., all edges gilt, though faded. Small tear and chip to spine, and pencil notation to front pastedown. Very good.
