Rockwell Kent typed letter signed. The American artist's candid letter upon his personal ''Ausable Forks, New York'' stationery is dated 11 March 1944. The famed illustrator of Moby Dick writes to Lt. Thomas J. Cobbe at Roswell Army Air Field in Roswell, New Mexico: ''...It is very heartening to hear from such a friend of my work as you and particularly, I may say, so substantial a friend and patron. I will be delighted to let you have what copies I can spare of the prints that you are lacking at prices considerably below those asked by dealers...When it comes to paintings our problem is a bit more difficult. You shouldn't buy a painting unless you like it a lot; and you can't like it unless you've seen it; and how in the world is that to be managed, with you in the Service and stationed in New Mexico? I can, however, tell you something about my paintings. The size in which I prefer to paint...is slightly less than 3 x 4 feet. And what I ask for them is between $1,000 and $2,500...what I charge for a painting depends pretty much on how much I like it myself. And probably those that I like the most are really the best. I need to sell paintings but am troubled at the same time by wanting to keep them...Consequently, I don't have a dealer...Rockwell Kent''. 2pp. letter on 2 sheets measures 8.25'' x 10.5''. Creasing, with a pencil notation and small area of light staining near the letterhead, else near fine.
