Famous 19th century U.S. Army engineers Daniel Phineas Woodbury and Joseph Gilbert Totten sign a letter to a Lt. Colonel in the Corps of Engineers, dated 5 March 1852. Handwritten by an unknown party, the letter reads: ''Sir, I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 29th...enclosing Report of Civilians Employed at Forts Monroe & Calhoun in Feby last. Your letter of 2 @ inst reporting operations...has also been received...[signed] D.P. Woodbury / Genl Totten''. 1pp. letter comes with second sheet serving as a stampless cover, bearing handwritten notation, ''On official business''. Measures 7.75'' x 9.75''. Toning and creasing, with separation to fold intersections. In very good condition overall.
