Surprising autograph letter signed by Civil War Admiral David D. Porter, asking a publisher to consider printing a novel he wrote. Ten years after publishing his autobiography, he writes to George Munro, Esq. on 17 April 1884: ''Sir: I have just finished and have ready for the press, the mss. [manuscript] of a romance of 2100 pages foolscap. The title of this romance is 'Allan Dare and Robert de Diable,' the name signifying in a measure the character of the book. I wish to ascertain on what conditions I can get this work published. I am not afraid of its not taking with the public, as it is full of remarkable incidents including the usual amount of love and crime. In publishing this work I do not wish to incur any expense, but wish to realize a profit from it...David D. Porter Admiral''. 2pp. on a single sheet of ruled stationery measures 7.75'' x 9.75''. Toning and creasing, else near fine. Porter's novel did get published under that name the following year.
