Three-volume set of Benson J. Lossing's ''The Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America.'' Volume I is a first edition, published by George W. Childs: Philadelphia: 1866. The second and third volumes were both published by T. Belknap: Hartford; the second volume in 1870 and the third in 1868. This handsome set comprises a factual chronicle of the entire conflict and Lossing's firsthand account of his tour of many of the Civil War battlegrounds in the years immediately following. Enhanced by ''many hundred engravings on wood, by Lossing and Barrit, from sketches by the author and others'', with frontispiece of Lincoln and his cabinet. Bound in marbled paper boards with brown leather trim to corners and spines. Gilt lettering and marbled edges and endpapers. Pencil notation to Vol. I fly-leaf and detachment of an etching of the Generals in Vol. II. Expected toning and shelf wear. In near fine condition given age.
