Dr. Seuss signs his given name: ''Ted Geisel'' to an autograph letter dated 19 May 1971. Despite being a private person and reluctant celebrity, he writes candidly on his personal stationery to a young artist-teacher. The letter reads: ''Dear Diddo, You're an awfully nice person to keep writing to me, whom you really must think of as a very rude person. (Which I'm not. I'm merely a guy who gets yanked around the world and seldom gets to roost at home. Just back from New York, we're off tomorrow for the Lyndon Johnson Library dedication in Texas. Then Hollywood. Then, in September to New Zealand on book publishing business.) I certainly do want to meet you, and am determined to do so. I am a great admirer of your work and I hear you do wonders in inspiring your students. And somewhere between early November and the middle of March we shall have dinner and talk about EXCELLENCE...a great subject that too few people are concerned with these days. After about the middle of October, I'll be back here, living on a fairly regular schedule. My unlisted phone is 454-7384. Please call and please pin me down for a definite date. I want it as much as you do. Good luck & best wishes / Ted Geisel''. Includes original envelope hand-addressed by Seuss. Letter measures 7'' x 10.25''. Creasing, ink notation to verso, and a stain to the lower right. In very good condition.
