John Hay signed book ''Poems of John Hay,'' Houghton, Mifflin, & Co.: Boston and New York: 1899. The two-time Secretary of State inscribes the front free endpaper in black ink: ''To Henry W. Fischer / With compliments of / John Hay''. Hay accompanied Lincoln in the box seat at Ford's Theater when he was assassinated. Runs 272pp. and measures 5'' x 7.25''. Bound in forest green cloth boards with gilt lettering. Slightly cocked, with wear to board edges and spine ends. Foxing and toning to leaves. Cracking between copyright page and title page at hinge. Very good.
