Character reference letter for Louis J. Weichmann, the key witness in the Lincoln assassination conspirator's trial, whose testimony convicted Mary Surratt. Weichmann socialized with John Wilkes Booth, Mary Surratt and John Surratt, which led many people to suspect the motives of his testimony against them. The letter dated 21 November 1888 is from James N. Huston, chairman of the Indiana State Central committee and later treasurer of the United States. He writes, ''...I always found him courteous, affable and discreet...'' Letter on Indiana State Central Committee stationery measures 8.25'' x 11''. Some toning, light creasing and slight separation at the folds else very good condition.
