Handwritten letter by Civil War soldier James P. Elliott of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery. Written to his mother in West Willington, Connecticut from Glastenburg while on furlough, letter reads: ''Oct. 12th 1863 / Dear Mother, Thinking you might wish to know my whereabouts and when to look for me home...I shall go to Windham today and remain I think until next Monday...I came to G. to see Mary, staid one night and then returned to Hartford the next day and went to Middletown staid with Harriet until Tuesday had a splendid visit, then went to Hartford and down to see Mary and eat 'Pumpkin Pies', in which business I have been very successful. I don't know, but I may think to send your bonnet home by express. If I should it will be there as soon as this letter...they all seem bound to make much of the 'Soldier Boy'...Love to all, James P. Elliott...'' Elliott served with the 1st CT Heavy Artillery for nearly the entire war and fought at Cold Harbor, Gaines' Mill, Bermuda Hundred, Petersburg and Richmond. Letter runs 2pp. and includes original envelope. Measures 5'' x 7.75''. Minor separation to third fold at right edge, else near fine.
