Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed as General of the U.S. Army. On 8 August 1945, just two days after the bombing of Hiroshima and one day before Nagasaki, he writes to his wife, Mamie. ''Darling...I'm sorry you didn't like my handwriting on the picture. I assure you I wrote it myself. I do not see how little Lopear could cause any uproar like followed upon the transportation of a big Dane. He weights 4 or 5 pounds and couldn't displace anything. Moreover, the plane is not a regular ATC affair and if people will just keep their mouths closed - a virtue that few seem to practice - nothing will be hurt. The dog belongs to Butch. John and I are about to start on a trip and possibly a week will go by before I have a chance to write again. But I'll send you a full description when I come back. I had been desperately hoping that Japan would quit, so [son John] J. could stay with me. What fun it is to have him - he and I have many long conversations in the evenings. But he is so anxious to get going that I simply cannot argue more with him. Everybody likes him. I can well understand that 750 is a madhouse. From that standpoint I'm glad you didn't go - but I feared, among other things, that mess across the hall. It's funny to know the gossips are now wondering why I didn't stop the mess - h---, I didn't suspicion any such thing until I got home.
