E. Poussielgue autograph letter signed as Comptroller of Expenses for the Army and Administrator of General Finances of Egypt. He writes to Napoleon Bonaparte in Cairo on Liberte Egalite letterhead. The French language letter is dated in accordance with the French Republican Calendar as the 7th year of the French Republic, during the month of Frimaire (late November through late December 1798). The month prior, Napoleon had violently quashed the Revolt of Cairo and continued to levy taxes on the Egyptians. His finance minister here reports: ''...The lands produce 4,714 per year / Income in kind 2,160 / The houses, boutiques 786 / Total revenue 7,660 per year...'' The letter says the sheiks requested certain properties pay no registration fee because the poor ''...make no relief...'' Signed ''E. Poussielgue''. Bonaparte would abandon Egypt the following year. 1pp. on card style stationery. Napoleon's name and title are handwritten to verso. Red wax seal remnant to verso. Measures 7'' x 10.75''. Toning, creasing, and a chip to verso upper corner. Very good.
