''Van Buren Electoral Ticket'' for the 1836 national election. ''For President'' is handwritten at the top with ''Martin'' added to Van Buren's name. ''For vice president / Richard M. Johnson'' is also written. The twenty-three Virginia representatives to the electoral college are listed below. Though Van Buren became President with all Virginia electors supporing him, these ''faithless electors'' from Virginia refused to support Johnson because he had lived with and fathered children with an African-American woman. As a result, no vice-presidential candidate won a majority. The decision was therefore made by the Senate which elected Johnson as Vice President, with both of Virginia's senators voting for him. Toning and foxing to 4'' x 6.5'' ticket, else very good.
