Original Cornelius Hicks poster for a 1917 Red Cross World War I campaign. The dramatic poster features a nurse comforting a child while the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse destroy the scene behind them. The slogan reads ''Our Greatest Mother / Join!'' At the time, the Red Cross encouraged women to join the war cause as nurses, enrolling 29,000 professional nurses during World War I. Hicks painted two American Red Cross posters and illustrated for several magazines including ''Collier's Weekly.'' The 20'' x 30'' poster has a few closed tears to margins, some chipping and tape repair to verso. Good plus condition.
