Carl Jung autograph letter signed, declining an invitation due to lack of energy he attributes to old age. Dated 21 February 1951 when Jung was 75, he writes to his mentee, Dr. Rivkah Scharf Kluger. Composed on his personal stationery in black fountain pen, letter translated from German reads in full,
''Dear Miss! / I would have liked to provide with you with the pleasure of having a meal together, but unfortunately my time is so full next week that I would not be able to add any additional commitment. I am constantly near the limit of my capacity and do not have the energy reserves that I used to have. It is the cunning feature of old age that the slightest additional exertion means a loss of substance that is difficult to repair. Even though I find this fact unpleasant and regrettable, I must still take it into account. As a result of yesterday's lengthy discussion, I feel very tired today, as is always the case after a full evening. I am very sorry to have to disappoint you. The only thing I can do is accompany you on your long journey with my good thoughts and wishes. / Your devoted / C.G. Jung''.
Two page letter on a single sheet measures 8.125'' x 5.75''. Single fold, overall near fine. Accompanied by original envelope in Jung's hand, postmarked 26 February 1951.
