Mark Twain signed limited edition set of ''The Writings of Mark Twain'', signed with both his legal name, ''SL Clemens'' and his pseudonym, ''Mark Twain''. London: Chatto & Windus, 1899-1903. This Author's Edition de Luxe is number 172 of 620 sets, signed by Twain on the limitation page. Includes all 23 original volumes with top edges gilt, bound in publisher's apple green cloth boards with paper labels, and printed on special paper with a Mark Twain watermark. Original photogravure frontispieces and plates throughout each volume, housing Twain's masterpieces: ''The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,'' ''Life on the Mississippi,'' ''The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,'' ''The Innocents Abroad,'' ''Roughing It,'' ''The Gilded Age'' as well as ''Short Stories and Sketches.'' Each volume measures 6'' x 8.5'' with corresponding limitation number of 172 inside. A near complete set without the rare last two volumes printed later in 1907. Sunning and fraying to spines, with some volumes more affected than others such as volume I showing tears to spine cloth. Paper labels show wear, with cracking to some. Hinges of volumes I, III, XIII, XIV and XX reinforced with white paper tape. Interiors are clean for most volumes. Overall in very good condition.
