Robert Louis Stevenson autograph letter signed, written from Wensleydale, Bournemouth, thereby dating the letter to circa October 1884, as Stevenson stayed at a boarding house in Wensleydale for only a few months in late 1884. In was shortly after his move to Bournemouth that Stevenson wrote his most famous novel, ''Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde''. In this letter, Stevenson writes to bookseller Mr. Walter Scott, requesting four books. Letter reads,
''Dear Sir, / Pray send me / 1. Wellington's Despatches: if possible the 15/- copy. / 2. Sidney Castle. 5 vols. / 3. The Delicate Distress [with] the Gordian Knot. 4 vols., and / 4. Colquhoun on the Police. / This makes a total of 25/- for which I enclose an order [from] my lawyers. The carriage and the other half crown should the first copy of the Despatches be gone, you will kindly let me hear about. / yours truly / Robert Louis Stevenson''.
Two page letter on a single sheet measures 3.875'' x 6.25'', composed on stationery with Stevenson's French home, La Solitude, embossed at top, which he crosses out. Single fold and light wear, overall in very good condition.
