Ernest Hemingway autograph letter signed regarding a film adaptation of his 1950 novel ''Across the River and Into the Trees''. Dated 20 January 1958, Hemingway writes to Jerry Wald, screenwriter and producer who had just established his production company, Jerry Wald Productions, via a deal with 20th Century Fox. Wald was apparently courting Hemingway for an adaptation of his novel. Letter reads in full,

''Dear Mr. Wald: / I've been waiting to see if I could give you any different answer. But it's still the same. It is still impossible for me to make a deal on Across the River. This can always change. But it hasn't yet. Thank you very much for your patience and for your good letters and the cable. / Best luck in everything for this year. / yours very truly, / Ernest Hemingway''.

Single page letter measures 8.375'' x 11'' on onionskin paper personalized with Hemingway's Cuban estate, Finca Vigia, at top. Light toning, three hole punched, shallow folds and abrasion to top corners with mounting tape on verso. Overall in very good condition.
